The “What” of True Identity

True Identity is almost better defined by what it is not. It is not the negative words adults and others spoke into your life growing up, things like: “you are good for nothing” and “you’ll never measure up”, “loser”, “liar”, “I wish you were never born”, or “you are a disgrace”…. There is even our negative self-talk: “I’m so stupid”, “I can’t do anything right”, “I’m a failure”, or “I’m hopeless”.  All of these add up to a negative self-image, demeaning self-worth and broken pieces of identity. We have an enemy who enjoys pointing out our unfortunate childhood experiences which leads us to false evidence of what acceptance and love are. His agenda is to rob, steal and destroy your identity so you won’t step into the destiny God has for you. It is his way of committing identity theft.

True Identity for a believer in Christ is simply this: How God sees you in heaven. The way we are known in heaven is His reality. We are His masterpiece. We are made in His image and as His image emerges in our hearts, our lives become an evidence of His creative genius, unchanging love, and empowering grace. God can see your identity clearly as you are in heaven.

The foundation of our true identity is:

  1. Abba, Father chose you.
  2. We are accepted in the Beloved

In scripture they are found in John 15:16 “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you would go and bear fruit, fruit that will last…” and in 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 “God from the beginning chose you…” The other is found in Ephesians 1:5-6 NKJV “We are accepted in the Beloved.” God’s relationship is with Jesus in us. Accepted in the Beloved means we live in the freedom of knowing we are always welcome, always loved, and always rejoiced over.
